1314 & 1315 - Construct Technology Building/Arts & Humanities Building
Project Delivery Method Design/Bid/Build (CM Multiple Prime)
Project Budget $34.1 million
Construction Duration 2009 – 2010
Scope/Summary
Combined as a dual-classroom building project, the new Business and Mathematics building is being constructed concurrently with the new Arts & Humanities building. Construction began in April 2009, and is targeted for completion in October 2010.
The Business and Mathematics building consists of approximately 45,899 gross square feet and 32,100 assignable square feet of new building construction include new "smart" classrooms equipped with computers, audiovisual and multimedia equipment, a mathematics research center, and related office space for faculty and support staff.
The Arts & Humanities building consists of approximately 44,905 gross and 30,480 assignable square feet of new building construction to house the English, Visual Arts, music, Speech and Foreign Language programs. The building will include new "smart" classrooms, a lecture hall, recording studio, studio space for drawing, painting and ceramics, and related office space for faculty and support staff.
The project includes several unique sustainable features:
-
Sloped roofs provide north-facing clerestory windows - a band of narrow windows at the very high wall, allowing light to filter into adjacent spaces - and south-facing photovoltaic (solar) panels.
-
The design includes energy-efficient thermal "massing" which delays the transfer of heat throughout the course of a day, and minimizes the impact of a heating or cooling load on a building. Heavy materials such as brick, concrete and stone can all be used to achieve thermal massing.
-
All windows utilize a "high performance" glass that allows sunlight to filter into the building, but reduces the amount of UV light and solar heat entering the building.
-
Recycled materials and high-efficiency lighting, plumbing and mechanical systems are used throughout the project.
Both designs were named "Projects of Distinction" winners in the 2008 Education Design Showcase, honoring innovative yet practical solutions in planning, design and construction of higher education facilities.
This project is currently under construction.
