1221 - East Campus Improvement Project
Delivery Method: Design-Bid-Build
Project Budget: $29.3M
Construction Duration: 2007 – 2009
Scope / Summary
The East Campus Improvement Project is composed of a new four-level parking structure for 1,100 cars, a new 7,000 gross square foot, single-story College Police building and a realignment of the campus’ east entry drive.
The new Police Offices include a waiting area, offices, a conference room, a secure suspect processing area, and a locker room area outfitted with daylight-harvesting fixtures and waterless and low-flow plumbing fixtures. The project was completed in July 2009, and is currently undergoing the application process to achieve a Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. It would be the District’s first police facility to be LEED certified.
The new parking structure uses concrete that includes the addition of fly ash, a commonly-used coal combustion product that serves as a strengthening agent when added to concrete. As an open parking structure, there is no need for mechanical ventilation systems. The parking structure opened in March 2009. Photovoltaic panels will be installed on the top level, and will help offset energy needs for the Police Station and nearby Allied Health Building.
The east campus roadwork provides for a simple, safe way to enter the new parking structure area and provide improved travel around the campus’ northern edge. The final roadwork will be completed by early December.
New landscaping emphasizes low water-use plants and trees that are compatible with the neighborhood climate, and uses a high-efficiency irrigation system with an automatic controller that measures available moisture before watering.
