Scope / Summary
The West City Campus is a new, two-story, 38,930 SF facility that serves as the Campus of Excellence for Hospitality and Consumer Sciences. It houses classrooms for Culinary Arts, Parenting, Sewing, Arts, Business Information Technology (BIT), English as a Second Language (ESL), and the Emeritus Program for students aged 55+. It also has space for Distance Learning, Testing, a Career Center Library, bookstore, administrative offices and includes a spacious multi-purpose room that can serve as a classroom space or serve as a venue for performances or special events.
The project was conducted in two phases:
Phase I - Demolition of existing multipurpose building and other classroom buildings. Relocation of existing utilities, construction of the new building and site improvements south of the building. Phase I was completed in January 2009.
Phase II - Demolition of remaining campus buildings and site items, construction of a new parking lot and landscaping improvements. The parking lot will use porous concrete for storm water management. Phase II was completed in May 2009.
The project includes a number of sustainable features, incorporates several recycled materials, such as fencing made of recycled plastic, countertops made of recycled newsprint, a play area surface made from recycled tires, and carpeting with a high volume of recycled content. West City has been recognized by San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) as a Sustainable Communities Champion. Energy efficiency features in place help West City to exceed California's Title 24 energy efficiency standards by 49.5%, providing an estimated annual energy savings of 282,098 kWh.
